Purpose Of Role :

The purpose of the Network Design Technical Team Lead role is to deliver the network design (to the highest level of quality) and design repeatability as a business output across the team. Specifically this role is accountable for:

  • Driving business performance, efficiency and continuous improvement within the team.

  • Delivering positive engagement and organisational health across the team, including resource planning (leveraging tools like Agility, Talent Management, etc.), and team development (employing Demand Led Development principles).

  • Managing stakeholders (across functions) to enable network design and delivery. Be a trusted advisor to the customer, and improve overall “Customer Experience”.

  • Leading and managing the performance of a team of Level 1 to 4 network designers, with between 8-12 direct reports (average span).

  • Driving readiness to support emerging technologies around DyNS/SDN/NFV aligned with BT’s “Cloud of Clouds” strategy.

  • Identifying (and successfully pursuing) opportunities to automate repetitive/standard tasks to reduce “Cost to Serve”.

  • Providing technical leadership through providing technical direction in complex and unknown platform and/or customer solution scenario's; focusing on new and emerging technology areas; accountable for technical and commercial decisions; and accountable for the impact of technical and commercial decisions on wider network lifecycle

Key Responsibilities :

Core activities

  • Provide technical design authority and direction in complex and unknown platform and/or customer solution scenario's.

  • Undertake technical assessment and business impact analysis of existing and emerging technologies across the network lifecycle.

  • Lead a large team and oversee complex network development using innovative approaches to design tools and routines.

  • Develop close and effective relationships with customers, vendors, suppliers and BT employees at a senior level, and be able to confidently present information and facilitate negotiations with them.

  • Identify opportunities for CI, and implement CI processes within the team (e.g. ownership of A3s).

  • Drive skills acquisition, development, knowledge sharing and engagement within team

  • Forecast supply and demand of resource requirements based on known and unknown business needs

Key / unique decisions made by this role

  • Business leadership decisions :

  • Decide on resource planning, i.e. skills investment.

  • Working closely with other teams, decide on transformation approaches including process improvement and standardisation of designs (e.g. system teams, product teams etc.).

  • Decide on the work package and statement of requirements (primarily for technical leadership roles).

  • Decide on how the work is done.

  • Technology leadership decisions:

  • Own the technical and commercial elements in capex spend and make recommendations to WL roles (circa £100K).

  • Decide on major customer and/or platform (p1) escalations and drive to technical resolution.

  • Decide on technical selection, vendor selection and new technology from a commercial and technical authority view.

Problem solving

  • Business leadership problems:

  • Solve problems on time, cost and quality of the overall business unit and improve these areas within a year.

  • Solve problems relating to skills and succession planning strategies as part of a wider learning and development strategy, in order to future proof the business unit.

  • Solve problems relating to work prioritisation and the associated allocation of resources by taking into account the skills dilemma.

  • Solve problems relating to vendor management.

  • Technology leadership problems:

  • Solve problems relating to significant developments in network platform wide issues, including the introduction of new technologies, resolution of issues and major issues in platform.

  • Solve problems relating to vendor issues including vendor delivery, interworking and vendor selection.

  • Sign off on standard designs and link into implementation, especially where the integration of solutions is predominantly unknown.

Change management

  • Business leadership changes:

  • Continuous improvement changes in terms of process, cost, health and/or quality of output.

  • Introduce changes associated with CI for their teams and broader teams.

  • Technical leadership changes:

  • Improve the designs for delivery of RFT and E2E cost.

  • Delivered transformational scorecard - i.e. refresh of skills, site location, CI, efficiency, TLR, commercial costs.

  • Delivered work packages and requirements as per agreed scope time, cost and quality measure

  • Delivered network design and design recommendations to address customer and/or platform needs, as measured by network availability and stakeholder feedback.

  • Evidence of trusted relationships with customers, peer group and senior stakeholders.

  • Created clear succession plans to ensure coverage and movement across contracts and platforms.

  • Delivered smart technical and business solutions which resulted in cost savings or revenue opportunities for BT.

  • Delivered agreed TLR/TLC plan for their team and maintained spend within budget.

  • Achieved strong YOURSAY results which reflects a highly engaged team.

  • Achieved network availability target for platforms.

  • Consistently met agreed utilization targets for their team.

  • Demonstrated technical knowledge sharing through the creation and sharing of design blueprints for new and emerging technology areas.

Timeframe

  • Within 12-18 months

Qualification

  • Candidates with a proven track record of planning, designing and delivering either a new product/Technology stream or a significant enhancement to an existing product/Technology stream. (Mandatory).

  • A relevant industry experience of around 12 years (or more) would be preferred.

  • ALP GOLD (CCIE or equivalent technology certification) is a must.

  • Candidates with an Engineering (BTech/BE) qualification would be preferred.

  • Candidates having a management qualification would be preferred.
