Key Purpose of Role

The purpose of the Senior Network Design Manager is to deliver the network design (to the highest standard of Quality) and design repeatability as a business output across the team. Specifically this role is accountable for:

  • Driving business performance, efficiency and continuous improvement within the team.

  • Delivering positive engagement and organisational health across the team, including resource planning (leveraging tools like Agility, Talent Management, etc.), and team development (employing Demand Led Development principles).

  • Managing stakeholders (across functions) to enable network design and delivery.

  • Leading and managing the performance of a team of Level 1 to 4 network designers, with between 8-12 direct reports (average span) and team size of 40-100.

  • Driving readiness to support emerging technologies around DyNS/SDN/NFV aligned with BT’s “Cloud of Clouds” strategy.

  • Identifying (and successfully pursuing) opportunities to automate repetitive/standard tasks to reduce “Cost to Serve”.

  • Be a trusted advisor to the customer, and improve overall “Customer Experience”.

  • Carries sound understanding of the domain (portfolio)/industry that is being supported out of Hub.

Key Responsibilities

Core activities

  • Lead a large team and oversee complex network development using innovative approaches to design tools and routines.

  • Develop close and effective relationships with customers, vendors, suppliers and BT employees at a senior level, and be able to confidently present information and facilitate negotiations with them.

  • Identify opportunities for CI, and implement CI processes within the team (e.g. ownership of A3s).

  • Drive skills acquisition, development, knowledge sharing and engagement within team

  • Forecast supply and demand of resource requirements based on known and unknown business needs

  • Review ongoing workstack and prioritise with associated resource management.

  • Drive high performance culture within the team.

Key / unique decisions made by this role

  • Decide on resource planning, i.e. skills investment.

  • Working closely with other teams, decide on transformation approaches including process improvement and standardisation of designs (e.g. system teams, product teams etc.).

  • Decide on the work package and statement of requirements (primarily for technical leadership roles).

  • Decide on how the work is done.

  • Drive the differentiation between SME/People Manager communities and develop individual plans for each.

Problem solving

  • Business leadership decisions:

  • Decide on resource planning, i.e. skills investment.

  • Working closely with other teams, decide on transformation approaches including process improvement and standardisation of designs (e.g. system teams, product teams etc.).

  • Decide on the work package and statement of requirements (primarily for technical leadership roles).

  • Decide on how the work is done.

Change management

  • Business leadership decisions :

  • Continuous improvement changes in terms of process, cost, health and/or quality of output.

  • Introduce changes associated with CI for their teams and broader teams.

Resource complexity

  • Deliver efficiency and flexibility.

  • Drive expertise of CI behaviours - manage cross team huddles.

  • Accountable for meeting TLR / TLC plan.

  • Delivery of speed of resource mobilisation across teams.

  • Ensure effective closure of activities.

  • Manage escalations across teams.

  • Sign off systems access at appropriate level.

  • Build budgets and manage to multiple plans.

  • Will have some responsibilities / accountabilities to finance

  • Will have 8-12 direct reports (span) and could be a mix of WL1 team leads and/or technical singletons as DRs, and team size will be between 40 -100.

Measure of success

  • Delivered transformational scorecard - i.e. refresh of skills (Demand Led Development), site location, CI, efficiency (Agility/Automation/Innovation), TLR, commercial costs.

  • Delivered work packages and requirements as per agreed scope time, cost and quality measure.

  • Evidence of trusted relationships with customers, peer group and senior stakeholders via improvement in NPS scores (both external and internal).

  • Clear succession plans to ensure coverage and movement across contracts and platform.

  • Delivered to agreed TLR/TLC plan for their team and maintain spend within budget.

  • Delivered smart business solutions which resulted in cost savings or revenue opportunities for BT.

  • Successful executed business change & realized agreed benefits.

  • Achieved strong YOURSAY results which reflects a highly engaged team.

  • Achieved performance differentiation in line with business performance, which improved the performance of the team overall.

Timeframe

  • Within 12-18 months

Qualifications and Experience

  • Candidates with a proven track record of setting-up and managing large Technical Teams (50-100 people or more). (Mandatory).

  • A relevant industry experience of 12 years and more.

  • ALP GOLD (CCIE or equivalent technology certification) is preferred.

  • ALP Silver (CCNP or Equivalent) is a must.

  • Candidates with an Engineering (BTech/BE) qualification would be preferred.

  • Candidates having a management qualification would be preferred.
